The Grand Master did not take the news of Simon’s mishap well at all. He went directly to the bedroom and closed the door in the same manner as the Apocalyptic Knight, leaving them all in the library, wondering what would happen next. Von Hetz had waited a few minutes before trailing after him. Lucio took Champlain and de Lyons back out to the car to unload the trunk, after receiving rather stilted greetings from Mark and Merry.

“Mark Andrew?” Merry asked and approached him cautiously as he sat in his chair staring at the fireplace.

He looked up at her and shook his head. Whatever the Knight of the Apocalypse had told him was not good. And she could not imagine that things could be worse.

“He looks well enough,” he referred to Lucio, no doubt.

“Yes,” she agreed. “I didn’t expect to see him. They didn’t tell me he was coming. You knew, didn’t you?”

“We will seal the crypt,” he said. “Apparently, the Master thinks we need his presence. I, for one, do not see why, but Brother Hetz wants to perform an exorcism before we go in. It would be a good idea, but he is… afraid,” he said and refused to look at her when he gave her this last bit of startling news. “He said that your Mystery contained more information about exorcism than his own. I told him that you were not ready for such a rigorous exercise. I hope that he will not press the matter,” he paused to meet her gaze and raised both eyebrows. “I know that you will not volunteer.”

She shook her head. Exorcism. Yes. It was there in her mind. All she had to do was think the word and the entire process became immediately accessible. The preparations, the rituals, the proper dates and times. The names of power. The proper clothing. Everything. She could do it. She knew she could, but she had just promised herself that she would listen to Mark from now own. Respect his wishes. Value his opinions. Do as he asked... do as he asked. The thought that she might be asked or expected to play a part in whatever the dark Knight had in mind did not help her feelings of foreboding.

Mark smiled and took her hand, pressing it to his lips.

“And don’t let the Master bully you into it,” he told her. “Soon we’ll be married and I’ll have a legal right concerning your... concerning your... future.” He ended the statement lamely. Things had changed. He would really have no more rights over her than he had at that moment. Wives were no longer required to love, honor and obey. A husband was lucky to have the first two.

Merry nodded. How could she tell Mark that she had made a mistake in accepting his proposal? She couldn’t bear the thought of hurting him again.

“I don’t have much time,” he told her. “I will have to leave for America soon. I had hoped we might be together at least one night, but with the Master here and Dambretti.
